Trino was born in Sioux City, on Dec. 30, 1931, to Trinidad and Delores (Cortez) Calvillo. His parents had immigrated to the United States from Mexico. They made their home in Sioux City, where they raised a family. Trino had three older sisters, Angela, Mary, Gloria, an older brother, Louie, and a younger sister, Delores. Trino graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in 1952.
In 1953, Trino was married to Patricia A. Matthews in Sioux City. They were divorced many years later. They raised five children, Kim Calvillo, Shelley (Howard) Staber, Patty (Jim) Nutzman, Amy (John) Moeller, and Mike (Becky) Calvillo.
A lifelong resident of Sioux City, Trino worked at Armour & Company for 10 years and was also a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve during that time. He was subsequently employed as a mail carrier, and then clerk with the United States Postal Service. He received a 33-year Service Award at the time of his retirement in 1992.
Indigenous to Sioux City's South Bottoms, Trino made and maintained many childhood friendships from that signature neighborhood and era. He was a varsity basketball player at Heelan, excelled in baseball, fast-pitch softball, and golf. "Carfino" was a gracious cribbage player, Milwaukee Weiner House aficionado, and cherished friend and family man. He was passionate about music and had a felicitous sense of humor. His fandom included the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and his beloved Heelan Crusaders.
In addition to his own kids, Trino was blessed with an amazing lineup of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Meggan and Ryan Fox (Johnny Fox), Katie and Matt Nice (Winni and Calvin Nice), John and Angela Staber (Aubrey and Ezra Staber), Michelle and Shay Hacker (Kainen Hacker), Andy Moeller, Falon and Andy Andersen (Madilyn and Hayden Andersen), Chris and Brittany Calvillo (Jackson Calvillo), and Joanne Calvillo (Trina Kidd and Weston Calvillo).
