MOVILLE, Iowa -- Val Bride, 74, of Moville died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Md.
A celebration of her life will begin 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine and Deacon Robert D. Lenz officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery at Kingsley, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., in the Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, Sioux City.
Val was born on Sept. 29, 1934, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of A.J. and Helen (Tolan) McGowan. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Briar Cliff College and St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1956. She married James Bride on April 22, 1957, in Sioux City. Val taught nursing at St. Vincent's until 1963, when she became a full-time homemaker, raising their four children. The couple lived in Sioux City, Vermillion, S.D., Pomeroy, Iowa, Pocahontas, Iowa, and retired in Moville.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville. She was an active member of its Piecemakers Quilting Group. Val loved spending time with her family and tending her roses. She was an active golfer, with a passion for couples golf with Jim, and she was a beautiful seamstress as well as making quilts and quillows.
Survivors include her husband, James; two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Ron Powers of Arlington, Neb., and Kelli and Evan Bisson of Omaha, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Michael and Lori of Akron, Iowa, and Patrick and Sharon of Owasso, Okla.; grandchildren, Daniel and Amanda Bride, Ian, Jonah and Kyleigh Bride and Brenton, Erin and Nathan Bisson; six sisters; three brothers; sister and brother-in-laws; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
