Vera was born on March 18, 1916, to Emery and Flossie (Sadler) Klingensmith at the family home near Correctionville, Iowa. She married Max Gregory Flathers on June 2, 1937, at her parents' home, rural Moville, Iowa. He died May 8, 1996.

Vera was a member of the Rock Branch United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, played the organ and was active in Women's Missionary Society. Vera attended Westmar College in Le Mars and taught school until her marriage. They lived on the Flathers Family Homestead at Rock Branch until moving to a condo at the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City in 1994. She enjoyed playing the piano at Sunrise for many of the activities there.

Her greatest joy was her family and all the grandchildren whom she adored being with until her health forced her to move to Cedar Falls in the Assisted Living Center to be near her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emery and Flossie Klingensmith.
