Verba P. Anderson, 83, of Sioux City, formerly of Carroll, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Schoop officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Verba Pauline Thompson was born April 4, 1924, to Edward and Elenora (Kristoffersen) Thompson in Creighton, Neb. She grew up in the Bloomfield, Neb., area. She was baptized on Nov. 4, 1924 and confirmed on April 6, 1941, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. She attended and graduated from Bloomfield High School with the class of 1943. She taught country school in Knox County, Neb., for a year. She moved to Omaha, where she worked for the Glenn L. Martin-Nebraska Company as a "bomber girl" building aircraft during World War II.
In June 14, 1947, she and William L. Anderson were married at First Lutheran Church in Omaha. To this union three children were born, Linda Jo, Donna Rae and Ronald Wayne. They lived in Omaha until 1962, where she was a homemaker. The family moved to Carroll, Iowa, where she was a den mother and active at St Paul's Lutheran Church. She worked for many years at Marty Ann's Dress Shop. The couple moved to Sioux City in 2004.
She enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing, gardening, camping and attending country music jamborees.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda and her husband, Clark BreDahl of Greenfield, Iowa, and Donna Watts of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a son, Ronald of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, John Spies of West Union, Iowa, Carrie BreDahl of Greenfield, Iowa, Adam Watts of Council Bluffs, Zachary Watts and his fiancee, Jennifer Morlan of Council Bluffs, Nicholas Watts and his fiancee, Shawna Lasher of Council Bluffs, Tobi Anderson of Sioux City and Robert Anderson of Sioux City; two great-grandsons, Clayton and Brant Spies of West Union, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Velma Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Doris Ferguson of Coralville, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William in 2006 after 59 years of marriage; four sisters, Mary, Ruby, Lydia and Josephine; two brothers, Clifford and Melvin; two nephews, Jerry and Michael Mortensen; two sisters-in-law; and six brothers-in-law.
