SIOUX CITY -- Verna A. Kohn, 86, of Sioux City passed away of natural causes Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at her residence surrounded by family members.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sylvia Kennedy officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Grandview Cemetery, Long Pine, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Verna was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Colome, S.D., to Harold and Lydia (Aden) Gable. She moved with the family to Long Pine, where she graduated from high school in 1942. She moved to the Sioux City area in 1958, and had been a resident ever since.
On Oct. 27, 1967, she married William "Bill" Kohn in Elk Point, S.D. She was employed as a nurse's aid at St. Vincent Hospital and later Marian Health Center for 25 years. She later went to work for St. Luke's Home Health and was employed there for 10 years. She thoroughly loved the time she spent in the medical profession, helping others.
She was a member of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church and was involved with United Methodist Women's Bible study. In her free time, she enjoyed fishing, dogs, flowers, taking care of people and her family. She also loved her chili during the football season.
Survivors include her husband, William "Bill" of Sioux City; two daughters, Juanita Beaubien of Correctionville, Iowa, and Pam and Terry Shever of Correctionville; nine grandchildren, Bryan Beaubien, Jaimee Beaubien, Andrea and David Carroll, Tom and Angela Kayl, Holly Beaubien, Elaine Hansen, John and Jana Heilman, Leah Shever and Adam Shever; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jan Wright; a son-in-law, Vince Beaubien; three sisters, Irene Cercone, Lona Gable and Betty Eubanks; and a brother, Richard Gable.
