SIOUX CITY -- Vernelle Bernice Phillips, 84, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

Vernelle was born April 23, 1924, near Newman Grove, Neb., the daughter of Gunder and Carolyne (Emmick) Abrahamson. She was raised and attended school in the Newman Grove area.
She married Arthur Phillips on Nov. 5, 1945, in Omaha. They made their home in Washington state for years before moving to the Sioux City area in the 1960s.
She was a member of the Senior Center. She loved to dance and travel with her special friend, Martin McHale.
Survivors include her children, Jeanine Moen of Washington state, Jack and Jackie Phillips of Sweet Home, Ore., Georgia and Jerome Blum of South Sioux City, David Phillips of Sioux City and Kathleen and Thomas Horn of LaCenter, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Scott, Christine, Michael, Laurie, Carrie, Sara, Tami and Shelly; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; a brother, Eugene Abrahamson; a sister, Nyla Johnson; and her special friend, Martin McHale.
