Vernette R. "Squeak" Parker, 93, of Climbing Hill, joined her husband in heaven Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Sunrise Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City, with the Rev. Dale Lint officiating. Burial will be in West Fork Cemetery at Climbing Hill. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with family present at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Vernette was born May 24, 1921, at Climbing Hill, the daughter of Joe and Bess (Galbraith) Gesaman. She graduated from Climbing Hill School. She received her college education at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, Morningside College in Sioux City and Wayne (Neb.) State College. She taught at several schools, including Climbing Hill, Hornick, Holly Springs and Mapleton, Iowa.
She married Vince Parker on Nov. 28, 1943, in the home of her husband's parents. The couple farmed in the Climbing Hill area for many years, and in 1977 they moved to Climbing Hill. Vince passed away in 1990. They were the loving parents of Dan, Carolyn, Kristy and Pam.
Vernette was a member of First Baptist Church in Climbing Hill her entire life, where she served on several boards and committees. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Climbing Hill Garden Club. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, playing cards, and dancing with her husband. She will be greatly missed and remembered by her family for her delightful sense of humor, her wonderful cooking and her unconditional love.
Survivors include her children, Dan (Kay) Parker of Sioux Falls, S.D., Carolyn Jacobsen of Moville, Iowa, Kristy (Mike) Hayes of Sioux City, and Pam (Kendall) Oliver of Bronson, Iowa; her grandchildren, Danay, Karrissa, Tiffany, Casey, Breanna, Brandan, Jennifer, Cassie, Austin, Allie and Noah; her great-grandchildren, Karissa's children Ashley, Nick and Ryan, Tiffany's children Brady, Audrey, Jacob and Emma, Breanna's children Olivia and Harper, and Allie's child Ryder; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Dorothy; her brother, John; a grandson, Shane Parker; and a great-grandson, Kyle Jensen.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Climbing Hill.
Vernette's family thanks the staff members at Sunrise Retirement and Hospice for their loving care and acts of kindness toward Vernette and the entire family.
