Vernon G. Nelson
JACKSON, Neb. -- Vernon G. Nelson, 59, of Jackson died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, from injuries suffered in a traffic accident on Highway 12, rural Ponca, Neb.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Paul M. Albenesius officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Vernon was born Sept. 12, 1950, in Sioux City, the son of Franklin I. and Dorothy C. (Goergen) Nelson. He was a lifelong resident of the Jackson area. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Emerson, Neb., in 1968.
He married Sylvia A. "Sam" Mohr on April 24, 1971, in Hubbard, Neb. She died April 6, 1996, in Sioux City. For the last 16 years, he had driven a truck for Sioux City Brick and Tile Co. Previous to that, he had farmed on the family farm.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing cards, barbecuing and smoking his own meat. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony G. "Tony" Nelson and his wife, Heather and Nicholas G. "Nick" Nelson, all of Jackson; four brothers, Franklin I. Nelson Jr. of South Sioux City, Thomas Nelson and his wife, Madonna of Papillion, Neb., Raymond Nelson and Vincent Nelson, both of Jackson; a sister, Marian Brown and her husband, Jerry of Fremont, Neb.; a special friend, Carol A. Ferdig of Sioux City; extended family, Paul and Jodi Mohr of May City, Iowa, Lois and Roger Schroeder of Mechanicsville, Va., and Cynthia and Mike Bauer of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Carol A. Nelson.
