Vicki Mercer Wollman, 68, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital, after a nearly two-year struggle with colon cancer.
A celebration of Vicki's life will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Vicki, the daughter of Bernard and Gladys (Stoewer) Mercer, was born Jan. 27, 1949, in Sioux City. She graduated from Central High School in 1967 and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Vicki was a swimming instructor at the YWCA, and later worked for the City of Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department as the manager of the city swimming pools.
In 1981, Vicki was united in marriage with Rick Wollman in Sioux City. She attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing and earned her nursing degree. Vicki worked at St. Luke’s, Mercy Medical Center, several physicians' offices and other healthcare-related organizations over the years. She retired in 2011, but continued to work part-time in the medical and healthcare fields.
Vicki served on the Crittenton Center Board of Directors and was active in fundraising. She loved quilting, and enjoyed crafts and knitting. Vicki also liked traveling, kayaking, pickle ball, cooking, and was in a potluck club. She spent many happy summers at Lake Okoboji in a cabin that her father built.
Vicki is survived by her husband, Rick Wollman; a son, Jason Wollman; a granddaughter, Molly Wollman; Molly’s mother, Kim Downs, all of Sioux City; a sister, Bernita Mannes of Yankton, S.D.; several cousins, including Lee Remer of Okoboji, Iowa, and Marijane Mercer of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the Crittenton Center.
