SIOUX CITY -- Victor "Vic" Babcock, 81, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Central Assembly of God Church with Pastor Craig Mellendorf officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, 5206 Military Road. Victor Robert Babcock was born March 20, 1927, to Charles and Zelma (Coon) Babcock in Sioux City. He graduated from Leeds High School and completed one year at Morningside College. Vic served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946.
On Dec. 10, 1960, Vic and Doris Sailors-Garner were married in Sioux City. He worked for Zenith for six years and as a custodian for the Methodist Church for 15 years, retiring in 1992.
Vic enjoyed gardening, woodworking, writing poems, playing chess, listening to music and had a stamp collection.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of Sioux City; sons, David Babcock of Lincoln, Neb., Jeffrey and wife, Dixie Babcock of Omaha, Neb., Gary and wife, Harriet Garner of Middleburg, Fla., Donald and wife, Karlene Garner of Salix, Iowa, Steven Garner of Sioux City, and Bernard and wife, Mary Garner of Jefferson, S.D.; daughters, LouAnn and husband, Mike Laudersmith of Wahoo, Neb., Betty Garner of Sioux City, Connie Hamilton of Sioux City, and Cheryl and husband, Patrick Boyle of Jackson, Neb.; 24 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Barbara and Kristy; a son, Doug; a daughter-in-law, Joyce; a son-in-law, Ed; brothers, Jack and Clair; a sister, Nadine; and four grandchildren.
