SIOUX CITY -- Vincent J. Farrer Jr., 79, of Sioux City passed away at home on April 21, 2012, facing death just the way he lived life; being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising some ruckus.
A celebration of Vince's life will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Born on March 27, 1933, in Sioux City to Vincent Sr. and Dorothy (Wehde) Farrer, Vincent was a lifelong resident.
He wed the love of his life, the ever-patient Marilyn Kamrath, on Oct. 15, 1960, in Luverne, Minn. He always said the first 50 years of marriage were the hardest. When he wasn't sharing his never-ending sense of humor or being just a little bit ornery, Vince found time to serve our country in the National Guard and owned and operated several businesses with his wife including Siouxland Taxi, Siouxland Beverage and Farrer Trucking, which operated a U.S. mail contractor and delivery service.
He also served on the township board in McCook Lake, S.D., the board of adjustment in Sioux City and was on the board of directors at Mary Treglia. In his free time, Vincent loved to try his luck at the casino and curse national politics. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph's Parish.
Vincent never lost his sense of humor, believing that you don't stop laughing when you grow old; you grow old when you stop laughing.
Helping him enjoy many hours of laughter was the loving family he is survived by: his wife, Marilyn Farrer; daughter, Sherry LaFleur and fiance, Terry (Duster) Hoffman of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; daughter, Debbie (Bill) Hoffman of South Sioux City; son, Steve (Camra) Farrer of Hinton, Iowa; mother-in-law, Hazel Breisch of Sioux City; sister, Betty Farrer of School Craft, Mich.; sister, Ruth (Norbert) Haas of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Bobby) Thompson, Sabrina (Roger) Sayler, Kimberly (Jon) Luken, Joe LaFleur, Trinette LaFleur, Aaron Hoffman, Megan (Ryan) Kegley, Adrienne (Blake) Harris, Grady Farrer, Izaak Farrer and Fletcher Farrer; and 11 great-grandchildren, whom he would tease mercilessly by always asking "Do you wanna go night night?" He was lucky to have us in his life, but we were far luckier to have him in ours. Night, night Bompa Vince.
Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Vincent Farrer, Sr.; son, Patrick Stephen Farrer; son-in-law, Steve "Beano" LaFleur; and father-in-law, Carl Kamrath.
