SIOUX CITY -- Violet Evelyn Axlund, 99, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at her residence.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Merrill Muller and Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Union Cemetery, Wakonda, S.D. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Violet was born Sept. 24, 1909, in Wakonda, S.D., the daughter of Frank and Winifred (Jenness) Rederick. She was raised in Wakonda and graduated from Wakonda High School.
On March 11, 1936, she married Ernest Axlund in Wakonda in a double wedding ceremony, where her sister married his brother. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1948. Ernest died May 5, 1985.
She was a 60-year member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, making a home for her family, sewing and going camping. What she loved most was spending time with family.
Survivors include a son, Larry of Sioux City; grandchildren, Jamie (Bret) Hayworth of Sioux City, Todd (Nancy) Axlund of Wadsworth, Ohio, Jeremy Axlund of Sioux City, Stephanie Turner of Sioux Falls, S.D., Chad (Stephanie) Nekl of Sioux Falls and Corey (Dawn) Nekl of Minneapolis; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Axlund of Wakonda; and three special friends, Marcia Deirup, Sally Elliot and Hettie Bohlmann, all of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a brother, Kenneth Rederick.
Pallbearers will be Todd Axlund, Jeremy Axlund, Bret Hayworth, Charles Graff, Ron Rederick and Lynn Martin.
