Violet Lulu (Hullinger) Sly, 95, of Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Lester and Clara (Graham) Hullinger, passed away on February 22, 2024, at a local care facility.
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024, at Christy Smith Chapel in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park, Sioux City. Visitation will take place at 9:00 a.m., an hour prior to the funeral. Online condolences may be offered at www.christysmith.com.
Violet was born on March 17, 1928, at home in Mercer County, Missouri. She had three brothers, Mervel, Russell and Gary, and a sister, Velva (Hullinger) Owen. Growing up during the Depression, she helped with the gardening and farm chores. She and her sister boarded with a family in Leon, Iowa, where they attended high school. Later she attended Drake University and graduated from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, with a degree in elementary education. During World War II, she and her sister worked in Richland, Washington where they supported an important military initiative—the Manhattan Project.
She married Dellmer W. Sly on August 19, 1949. They met while she was teaching school in Davis City, Iowa. They lived in eastern Iowa for many years before moving to Dakota Dunes in 1992. Violet moved to Sioux City in 2021.
She earned her Masters degree in education from the University of Colorado at Greeley, Colorado and her Masters degree in elementary counseling from the University of Iowa.
She devoted her life to education, serving students for 38 years. She taught in school districts in San Diego, California; Hubbard, Prescott, and Davenport, Iowa. While in Davenport, she also served as a counselor at McKinley Elementary School and Sudlow Junior High School. She retired from the Davenport School District in 1989.
Violet enjoyed gardening, cooking, cards (especially bridge), and traveling. One of her favorite places to travel was Disneyworld where the family vacationed for many years. One of her favorite memories was as Parade Marshall at the Magic Kingdom. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family and attending grandchildrens’ activities.
Violet had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church, First Methodist Church, Retired Teachers, Just Another Club, and Personian Club.
Survivors include daughter Dawn (John) Terpstra of Lynnville, Iowa; son David (Lin) of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren Ryan (Whitley) Williams of Duvall, Washington; Bryce Williams (Chris Tran) of Des Moines, Iowa; Dana Sly (Jon Ericksen) of Boston, Massachusetts; and Lyndsay (Hunter) Storm of St. Charles, Missouri. Great grandchildren include Blakely Storm, Eden Storm, Micah Storm, and Amelia Williams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers and sister.
