Sioux City - Virgil G. Pojar, 82, of Sioux City passed away Sept. 20, 2012, at his residence, with family present.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Neil Peck officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Virgil was born on June 17, 1930, in Norfolk, Neb., to Herman and Rose (Kucera) Pojar. As a youth, the family moved to South Sioux City, where he grew up and attended school. Since then he had been a resident of the Siouxland area. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
On Oct. 7, 1950, he married Bonnie Cornwell in Sioux City. She passed away Oct. 17, 2005, in Sioux City. Virgil was a switchman for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for over 40 years, retiring in 1991.
He was also very active in the Shrine and Masonic Temple, where he was a member. He was also in the Scottish Rite, former captain of the Abu Bekr Rat Patrol. Virgil enjoyed going fishing, his flower garden, horse racing, being a family man and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include five sons, Scotty and Ardis Pojar, Randy and Roxanne Pojar and Greg and Diane Pojar, all of Sioux City, Jeff and Tammy Pojar of Portage, Mich., and Danny and Donna Pojar of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a daughter, Tammy and Stephen Langel of Jefferson, S.D.; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Duane and Dona Pojar, Pat Pjar, Angie and Bill Bradish, Margurite and Cheryl Roberts, Vada and John Coan, Char and Rod Snyder, Larry and Cindy Pojar, Carolyn and Dan Angerman and Tom Pojar.
He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Larry Hallstrom; siblings, Leo Pojar, Adeline Evans, John Pojar, Wally Pojar, Bob Pojar and Lois Luenhagen.
