Virgil R. Weigel, 98, of Elk Point, S.D., former Sioux City resident, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at an Elk Point Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Virgil was born on Feb. 8, 1916, in Salix, Iowa. He was the son of Nathan and Sadie (Stekelenburg) Weigel. He lived in many areas of Siouxland as he grew up. He attended Sergeant Bluff High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served until 1945. He was awarded the Battle Star from the Battle of Normandy and the Bronze Star for the Adrienne Battle.
On Aug. 26, 1942, he married Eva Mae Washburn in Brownwood, Texas. After the war the couple made their home in the Siouxland area. He worked at the Cudahy Packing Plant, farmed and worked as a machinist for North American Manufacturing Co. and the Hesston Corporation. Virgil retired in 1981.
Virgil was a former member of the Eagles, V.F.W. 580, St. James Methodist Church in Sioux City, and the Hinton United Methodist Church. He and Eva loved going to Minnesota fishing, camping and they enjoyed traveling. Virgil enjoyed watching and going to baseball games. Eva died on April 13, 2003, in Sioux City.
He is survived by two sisters, Arlene Skogen of Scotland, S.D., and Julia Larson of Baudette, Minn.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Georgia Jean Cole and Darlene Dormanen; and three brothers, Le Roy, Douglas and Sherman Weigel.
