Virginia May "Ginny" Weikert (Ward)

Sioux City - Virginia May Weikert, 80, of Sioux City passed away Friday, April 19, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital, after sudden cardiac arrest.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tim Bonney officiating. Private family burial will be prior to services in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel
Virginia was born May 30, 1932, on a farm near Verdigre, Neb., to Jay and Mary (Mardesen) Ward. She moved to Omaha in 1942, and graduated from Tech High in Omaha in 1949.
She married Dick Weikert Nov. 22, 1951, in Omaha. They lived in Morning Sun, Iowa, for eight years, before moving to Morningside in Sioux City.
She attended Morningside College. In her 30 years of employment, she worked as an admissions secretary at Morningside College, and at the Soil Conservation Service. She worked as a court clerk in the Law Enforcement Center.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Esther Circle UMW, T.T.T. Chapter CG and several bridge clubs. She was a certified teacher with the Laubach Literacy Council. She enjoyed volunteering in schools and at church, collecting hummingbirds, reading, water walking, participating in Bible studies, playing bridge and cribbage, and presenting programs. Time spent with her grandchildren was the highlight of her life. She was the best grandma.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Dick Weikert of Sioux City; her son, Dick (Susan) Weikert of Jacksonville, Ill.; her daughters, Cathy Dartman of Creighton, Neb., and Kim (Chris) Weikert-Moner of Georgetown, Mass.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rebecca (Mike) Raney, Meghan Weikert, Julie (Phil) Madsen, Melissa Weikert, John Moner, Jensena Moner, Jayse Weikert, Benjamin Dartman and Mattisyn Weikert; a sister-in-law, Sue (Larry) Utley of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ellen Hansen and Norma Moyer; brother and sister-in-law, George and Betty Weikert; son-in-law, Neil Dartman; and grandson, Staff Sgt. Matthew Weikert, killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010.
