Virginia was born at home Oct. 19, 1908, the 12th of 14 children to the Luxembourg parents, Michael and Mary (Lesch) Goetzinger in rural Remsen, Iowa.
She was married to Frank Wilmes on Jan. 13, 1938, at St. Catherine's Church in Oyens, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Mary, Mike and Mark. They lived for many years in Oyens, where she was a homemaker. In 1957, the family moved to Sioux City. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital in central supply for 17 years, retiring in 1973.
She treasured time with her entire family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook and was most known for her homemade bread, which she loved to share with her family. She always enjoyed receiving cards and visits from her nieces, nephews and friends. She liked to entertain and was always up for a good game of pinochle. With her love of crocheting, she wrapped many babies in her special blankets.
Thankful to have shared her life are her daughter, Mary Wilmes; her son and daughter-in-law, Mike Sr. and Louise Wilmes; a daughter-in-law, Pam Wilmes; grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Wilmes, Chris (Kate) Wilmes, Mark (Erica) Wilmes, Kevin (Susan) Wilmes, Shelly (Ed) Rotert, Lisa (Dennis) Haney, Theresa (John) VanEldik, Jodi Fiscus, Laurie (David) Bentson, Ryan Wilmes and Matthew Wilmes; 34 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her caregivers and the many friends she made at Indian Hills Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in 1963; her son, Mark in 2007; eight sisters; five brothers; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Jr., Chris, Mark Jr., Kevin, Ryan and Matthew Wilmes.
The family is especially grateful to the staff at Indian Hills Care Center. They are proof that there are "Angels Among Us."
