Walter George Freeman

September 18, 1925 — April 17, 2013

Walter G. Freeman, 87, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Holy Spirit in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Walt was born on Sept. 18, 1925 in Sioux City. He was the son of Max and Anna (Rother) Freeman. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident and attended Immaculate Conception grade school, East Junior and graduated from East High School in 1943. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served during World War II.
Walt returned to Sioux City after the war and married Ellamae Engebrigtson on Feb. 22, 1947 in Elk Point, S.D. Walt owned and operated Freeman TV for nearly 60 years. He also did sound systems and scoreboards for local churches and schools.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a former member of the Church of the Nativity. Walt enjoyed golfing, gardening and going to work. He was an avid Heelan fan and a Hawkeye fan. He looked forward each year to the Canadian fishing trip with his sons and grandsons. He singularly did many home and yard remodeling projects and could fix almost anything. His family was most important to him.
He is survived by five sons, Steve and Liz of Mendham, N.J., Greg and Patty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Doug and Vicki of Sioux City, Mark and Jan of Lafayette, Ind., and Patrick of Dakota Dunes; three daughters, Jeanine Freeman of Des Moines, Iowa, Kris and Ken Girard of St. Joseph, Mo., and Carol Freeman of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Mary Lynberg of Morrow, Ga., and Ann Brown of Green Valley, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Ellamae, who died on June 22, 2005 in Sioux City. He also was preceded in death by his young son, David; his daughter-in-law, Elinor; and his grandson’s wife and daughter, Sarah and Karsen.
Walt was a good man. Our sadness is deep in losing him but our joy and gratitude are great for the privilege of him in our lives. We thank the many people who remained connected to him and assisted him, most particularly, his many caregivers at Holy Spirit who watched over him, showed him respect, befriended him in challenging moments, and gently ministered to him in his final days.
A memorial has been established in his name for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
