Sioux City, Iowa - Walter V. Jonas, 100, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes .
Walt was born May 18, 1913, at Randolph, Neb., the son of Stephen and Teresa (Wingert) Jonas. He attended school and graduated from Randolph High School.
Walt married Althea Cressy on Dec. 25, 1935, in Omaha. They made their home in Sioux City.
Walt worked as an inspector for the railroad, retiring in 1978.
After retiring, Walt and Althea enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Palm Springs, Calif. They were married for more than 77 years. Althea died Nov. 18, 2013.
Walt was a devout Catholic and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He attended daily mass until his health would not allow it. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed doing all sorts of things, from carpentry to auto repair, and fixing radios.
Survivors include 11 children, Patricia Gibson of College Station, Texas, Richard (Bonnie) Jonas of Sioux City, Marilyn "Jean" (Michael) O’Connor of Sioux City, Betty (Jim) Laddusaw of Spencer, Iowa, Robert (Dawn) Jonas of Rolling Hills, Calif., David (Marilyn) Jonas of Mansfield, Texas, Judy (Bob) Yeager of Rogers, Minn., William Jonas of Fairfax, Va., Mary Jo Goebel of Kansas City, Mo., Alan (Regina) Jonas of Troy, Mich., and Karen (Ralph) Hecht of Merrill, Iowa; 54 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Althea; a son, Gary; a daughter, Nancy; two grandchildren, Katherine Goebel and Karen Jonas; sons-in-law, Bill Gibson and Steve Goebel; two brothers, Steve and Gerald; and a sister, Marcella Krause.
