Wanda Heffner, 81, of Sloan died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3204 South Lakeport, in Sioux City, with the Rev. Russell Senstad and the Rev. David Zirpel officiating. Interment will be in Little Sioux Township, Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Wanda was born on May 12, 1933, in Lonzka, Poland, to Edward and Johanna (Schewe) Zittlau. She grew up and attended school until World War II changed her life forever. As a refugee of World War II, the family moved to the United States, became citizens and moved to the Smithland, Iowa, area.
She was united in marriage to Franklyn Eugene Heffner on Aug. 19, 1953, in Mapleton, Iowa. She had resided in the Sloan and Hornick, Iowa, area for the last 50 years.
Wanda was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was very family oriented and enjoyed participating in her children and grandchildren's sporting events. Mrs. Heffner was very respected and liked in the community.
Survivors include two sons, Rick and Barb Heffner of Le Mars, Iowa, and Frank and Kathy Heffner of Sioux City; two daughters, Linda Heffner of Sloan, and Lana and Curt Kay of Holstein, Iowa; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Devon McDougall, Erin Heffner, Andrew Heffner, JoAnne Kay, and Melissa Kay; four great-grandchildren, Dominic, Payton and Jake McDougall, and Ava Lykken-Kay; and a brother, Horst and Judy Zittlau of Sergeant Bluff; sister, Inga Henry of Audubon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Franklyn Eugene Heffner; and a brother, Bruno Zittlau
