Wanda "Lorraine" Brooks

August 20, 1931 — February 3, 2018

W. Lorraine Brooks, 86, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at Whispering Creek Senior Living Community.
No services are currently planned but may be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Lorraine was born on Aug. 20, 1931, to Walter and Mary (Bartels) Gernhart, near Moville, Iowa. She moved with her family to Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools, eventually graduating from East High School. Lorraine went on to attend Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, and earned her teaching certificate. Upon graduation from Graceland, she taught kindergarten and enjoyed that time immensely.
She married Thomas Brooks in Sioux City on June 26, 1954 and gave up teaching to become a full-time homemaker. She gave birth to two sons, Jerry and Don and immersed herself in raising her boys and doting on her husband.
She was an excellent cook and was famous (in her family, at least) for her pies. When her sons were grown, Lorraine and Tom became avid campers and were long time members of the local Coachman Camping Club and other camping clubs. She was an active socializer and liked nothing better than to invite the neighborhood ladies over for coffee and conversation. Lorraine was a big Iowa Hawkeyes fan and spent many happy hours watching Hawkeye football and basketball.
She is survived by her son, Don Brooks of Ida Grove, Iowa; and grandson, Philip Brooks of Ida Grove.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Brooks; son, Jerry Brooks; sister, Kathleen Brooks; and brother, Ron Gernhart.
In honor of Lorraine, the family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to the Alzheimer's Association in Lorraine's name.
