Warren L. "Pete" Barnes, 83, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Holy Spirit Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Southern Hills Baptist Church. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Warren Lee "Pete" Barnes, the son of Donald and Hazel (Stratton) Barnes, was born on a Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1935, in Sioux City. He attended East High School. In 1953, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served proudly during the Vietnam Conflict. Pete was also on several ships throughout his career, mostly on the west coast. He retired with 20 years of service as an E-7 chief petty officer.
On March 29, 1957, Pete was united in marriage with Charlotte Jones in Sioux City. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Cloverleaf Cold Storage and S.C. Country Club. He started a family lawn business called MD & K. He worked for 16 years at Countryside Nursing Home.
Pete was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church and belonged to a singing quartet. He enjoyed woodworking, yard work, garden work, and genealogy. Pete was fond of music and hunting, but his greatest passion was fishing.
Pete is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Whiting, Iowa; his children, Deborah Barnes of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Gregory (Annette) Barnes of Jefferson, S.D.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Lynn (Linda) Barnes of Moville, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded by his parents; sisters, Gertrude "Trudy" Scott, and Viola Sherman; a brother, Farrell "Buzz" Barnes; and an infant brother, Robert.
