SIOUX CITY -- Wendell Steele Lower, 84, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Good News Baptist Church, 3200 West 19th St., with the Rev. John Woodford officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Wendell was born June 21, 1925, at Scranton, Iowa, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Friese) Lower. He grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School. Wendell entered the U.S. Navy in September 1943 and was honorably discharged in May 1946.
He married Donna J. Mannion on June 27, 1953. Together they made their home in Sioux City. Wendell worked as a PBX specialist for Qwest Communications for over 40 years, retiring in the early 1980s.
Wendell and Donna moved to Arizona for several years before returning to Sioux City in 2008. Wendell enjoyed playing solitaire, golf and tennis.
Survivors include his wife, Donna of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Mitch and Pam Lower of Salix, Iowa, and Tim and Tabitha Lower of Lawton, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Gloria G. and Randy Brown of Munising, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jessi, Michaele Jo, Dylon, Libby and Abigail; one great-granddaughter, Kara Rose; two brothers, John Lower of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and James Lower and his wife, Lois of Sioux City; and a sister, Marion Ash of Alexandria, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Cory.
