Wilbur was born July 27, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Albert W. and Anna L. (Krom) Grohs. He was raised on a farm just outside of Sioux City. He graduated from East High School in 1941. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on a ship in the Asian Theater. His ship transported the occupation troops to Japan. After the service, he returned to Sioux City, where he operated a construction business with his uncle, Krom-Grohs Builders.

On March 15, 1947, he married Martha Arlene Nicolaus in Naper, Neb. After his business closed, he worked on the construction of the Port Neal Plants. He retired in 1982 due to poor health.

He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served as a trustee at the church. He was a member of American Legion Post 97 of Homer, Neb., and the local carpenters union 948. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and, most of all, spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; three daughters, Patricia and Bill Wiseman of Homer, Neb., Susan and Craig Barnes of Sioux City, and Janet Roepke of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, William and Vanessa Wiseman, Elizabeth Heath, Jesse Wiseman, Jennifer, Jessica and Jerrica Barnes, Molly and Morgan Roepke; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond and Marilyn Grohs of Sioux City; three sisters, Mary and Rhinehart Lewis of Fallon, Nev., Bernice Johnsen of Sioux City, Ellen and Merlin Green of Red Oak, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Megan Roepke; and infant twin sisters.

A memorial has been established in his name for St. Paul's Lutheran Church or The Good Shepherd Hour.
