William Melville "Bill" Bergeron

William Melville "Bill" Bergeron, 93, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Bill was born on Aug. 25, 1920, in Hibbing, Minn., the son of Bert and Nora (Grenier) Bergeron. He graduated from Hibbing High School, attended Hibbing Junior College for two years, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Aug. 19, 1942. Bill served in the South Pacific on the Solomon Islands and Philippine Islands. He started college in June 1946 and graduated from St. Cloud State College in 1948 with a BA degree.
Bill accepted a teaching position in August 1948 in Sioux City. He taught physical education at East Junior High for 17 years. He received his master's degree plus 30 hours from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Bill served as director of physical education for Sioux City Schools until his retirement in 1984. He served 19 years as the director. In 1991, he was named honorary referee of the Sioux City Relays.
Bill married Anne M. Cullen of Fargo, N.D., in August 1950. They spent their entire married life in Sioux City. While in Sioux City, five children were born.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Bergeron of Sioux City; daughter, Jean and Dale Monroe of Marion, Iowa; son, John and Rose Bergeron of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Collette Beitelspacher of Le Mars, Iowa; daughter, Mary and Dan Scholl of Sioux City; daughter, Elizabeth and Bob Olson of Woodland Park, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Clair of Chicago, Ill., and Ethel Mae Costello of Eveleth, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Leonard Beitelspacher; and a brother, John Bergeron.
