William "Bill" Butters, 69, of Moville, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 , at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery . Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m. , all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Bill was born on July 9, 1944 , in Denison , Iowa , the son of William and Frances (Cooper) Butters. As a child, he moved with his family to Whiting, Iowa , where he attended school and graduated from Whiting High School . He joined the U.S. Navy in March 1964.
After his honorable discharge, he married Joyce Hofstatter. To this union three sons were born, Scott, Blaine and Brian. They later divorced. After the U.S. Navy, Bill joined the U.S. Army and later the Air National Guard retiring from the military in 2006. He married Becky Dahmer-Adams on April 24, 1993 in Las Vegas , Nev. They had two sons, Bryce and Brady. Bill and Becky made their home in the Siouxland area before finally moving to Moville in 1997.
Bill worked for U.P.S. for more than 35 years, retiring in 2006. He then drove the school and activities bus for Woodbury Central until 2012 when his health began to fail. Bill would hand out Life Savers candy everyday at school to both students and teachers. If the kids were good on the bus all week, they would get a Jolly Ranchers.
Bill was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Abu Bekr Shrine, where he enjoyed being part of the Motorcycle Escort and the Hospital Dads. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 532 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite and the American Legion Wink-Sparks Post 303 in Moville.
Bill was very active in archery. He shot competition and was two time state champion in South Dakota , a regional champion and even taught archery at Woodbury Central for a time. He was active with the Boy Scouts and tried to keep his boys active in the outdoors. Bill loved hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed helping out at the Senior Center and riding his motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Becky of Moville; five sons, Scott and Susan Butters of Fort Collins, Colo., Blaine Butters of Moville, Brian Butters of Fort Collins, Bryce Butters of Moville, and Brady Butters of Moville; two grandchildren, Trevor Butters and Megan Butters; three sisters, Roberta Kelley of Whiting, Norma and Vince Rago of Spokane, Wash., and Barbara and Lyle Harding of Whiting; a brother, Jim and Paula Butters of Fort Collins; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
