LAWTON, Iowa -- William "Bill" Goodwin, 61, of Lawton died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab in Kingsley, Iowa, following a courageous five-year battle with ALS.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Bill was born Feb. 12, 1947, at Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of William and Dorothy (Barth) Goodwin. He graduated from Lawton High School and continued his education at Iowa State and graduated from Wayne State.
He married Kathy Hoelker on June 22, 1968, at Moville, Iowa. Bill taught school at Woodbury Central in Moville for five years. He then went to work as an insurance agent at EGR Insurance Agency for 25 years.
Bill was an active lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton. He had served as a volunteer firefighter, on the Lawton Town Council and was a member of the Meadows Golf League. He was an NAIA basketball All American and an individual and team basketball Hall of Fame member, both at Wayne State College.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Goodwin of Lawton; a son and his wife, Todd and Nicole Goodwin of Kingsley, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Tricia and Brent Scheideman of Becker, Minn.; his mother, Dorothy Goodwin of Lawton; four grandchildren, Madison, McKenzie and Beau Goodwin of Kingsley, and Eli Scheideman of Becker; and two sisters and their husbands, Judy and Phil Stevens of Lawton, and Joyce and Frank Cloudas of BayMinnette, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Goodwin; and a nephew, Jason Stevens.
