SIOUX CITY -- William Earl "Bud" Smith, 73, of Sioux City died Saturday, May 28, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Valley Cemetery in Pisgah, Iowa, at a later date. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Bud was born Dec. 18, 1937, in Sioux City, the son of Donald and Rebecca (Campbell) Smith. He was raised in rural Jefferson, S.D., and attended Union County Schools. Bud moved to Sioux City at age 18.
He married Janice J. Alton on Oct. 21, 1958, in Sioux City. Janice died June 15, 2007, in Sioux City.
Bud was a truck driver, welder, carpenter and roofer. He co-owned and operated J & J Roofing and snow removal for 40 years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was active with Siouxland Historical Railroad Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cards, chess and playing cribbage. He enjoyed spending time with his cats.
Survivors include six sisters, Judy and Roger Nicolls of Sioux City, Donna and Leo Foxhoven of Dakota City, Linda and Warren Vavra of Donnelly, Minn., Betty West of Akron, Iowa, Blanche and Robert Groszkrueger of Jefferson and Becky Roemmich of McCook Lake, S.D.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
