SIOUX CITY -- William Robert Carter, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, at Countryside Senior Living following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Naval Reserves. William R. Carter was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of William Louis and Martha (Mussett) Carter. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in January 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy in October 1944, and served on the destroyer tender, USS Shenandoah through July 1946.
He married Dorothy L. Gaede on Nov. 23, 1946, at First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. They moved to Peoria, Ill., while Bill attended Bradley University. He started working for Iowa Public Service Co. in Waterloo in 1948, transferring to Charles City, Iowa, in 1950, and finally to Sioux City in 1966. He retired in 1991, after 43 years in various electrical engineering positions. Following retirement, he continued working part time for Mid-American Energy for 11 years, doing work in Sergeant Bluff. He later worked part time as a Sergeant Bluff employee for three years.
While living in Sioux City, the couple attended St. Mark Lutheran Church, where Bill served in the church council as treasurer for a number of years, and was a money counter. He belonged to the Young At Heart group. After retirement, he spent a lot of time golfing with the IPS retirees group on Tuesday and a smaller group on Thursdays and Fridays. He was always up for a round of golf (sometimes even a good round).
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Ann (Patrick) Barrett of Lawrenceville, Ga., JoLaine (Steve) Noreen and JoAnne (Wayne) Steckelberg of Sioux City; a special friend, Elaine Miller; grandchildren, Todd (Peggy) Steckelberg of Omaha, and Bryan and Bryce Noreen of Sioux City; and a great-granddaughter, Camryn Rose Steckelberg of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; and a granddaughter, Mindy Jill Steckelberg.
Memorials will be at the discretion of the family.
