William B. Devine

Sioux City - William B. Devine, 99 of Sioux City died on February 7, 2016 at a local hospital.
Grave side services will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA., date to be determined.
William (Bill) was born Dec. 30, 1916 in Irvington, Iowa. He was the son of Frank and Mary Devine. Bill attended high school in Algona, Iowa, earned a Bachelor's degree from Northern Iowa University and a Master's degree from the University Of Iowa.
Bill served as a teacher, athletic coach and school superintendent in the Iowa school system from 1937 through 1944 and from 1946 through 1983. He served in the U. S Navy from 1944 through 1946. He secured his first teaching position in Dundee, Iowa at the age of 20 and retired from his position as school superintendent at Woodbury Central in Moville at the age of 66.
Bill had many interests including hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing cards. He was also active in the Methodist church, Masons, and other civic organizations.
Bill married Metta I. Devine on June 7, 1940.
He is survived by his daughter Julie Bateman of Salem, Conn., son Bill and his wife Marilynn of Cartersville, Ga., grandchildren Jennifer (Pete) Shannin of Decatur, Ga., Alec Bateman (Felicia) of Charlottesville, Va, Metta Devine-Qin of Goodletsville, Tn., and great-grandchildren Jack and Aaron Shannin.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Metta, daughters Susan Schwarm and Marilyn Devine.
