CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- William "Bill" Hayes, 72, of Citrus Springs, Fla., formerly of Correctionville, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, in Citrus Springs.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City, with Beverly Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. William "Bill" Hayes was born Jan. 6, 1937, near Correctionville, the son of John and Nora (Luce) Hayes. He attended school and graduated from Cushing (Iowa) Community School in 1955. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation. He served aboard the USS Dortch, USS Brister and the USS Prichett.
He married Barbara Ann Hurst on March 18, 1969, in Las Vegas, Nev. He spent many years in the auto sales business in Cheyenne, Wyo.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Cheyenne, Wyo. He had also been a member of the American Legion Post 6 in Cheyenne for 33 years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Hayes of Citrus Springs, Fla.; three sons, Sean Hayes of Brooksville, Fla., Rick and Brenda Schlotman of South Sioux City and Randy and Lisa Schlotman of Adrian, Mo.; three daughters, Phyllis Beasley of Panama City Beach, Fla., Sharon Lairscey of Panama City Beach and Rychelle Henson of Littleton, Colo.; his mother, Nora Bell Hayes of Sioux City; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Dan and Donna Hayes of Van Buren, Ark., Gary and Marian Hayes of South Sioux City, Joe and Holly Hayes of Cherokee, Iowa, Chuck and Tammy Hayes of Moville, Iowa, John and Margie Hayes of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tom and Mary Ellen Hayes of Sioux City and Mike and Kristy Hayes of Sioux City; three sisters, Jackie and Vergil Heyer of Cushing, Iowa, Judy and Don Kendall of Pahrump, Nev., and Carol and Nick Corey of Sioux City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Mathew Hayes; and a son, Alan Lairscey.
