William S. Schwarz Sr.

William S. Schwarz Sr., 91, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at a Le Mars, Iowa hospital.
No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
William was born on July 25, 1922, in Grafton, Neb., the son of Henry A. and Annie E. (Reeves) Schwarz. He grew up in Alliance, Neb., and Lincoln, Neb., where he graduated from high school in 1941. After high school, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart after being wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. After he was discharged from the service, he returned to Lincoln.
On Jan. 30, 1948, he married Genevieve Louise Miller in Lincoln. The couple lived in Lincoln, Topeka, Kan., Lansing, Mich., Sioux City and Phoenix, Ariz. Genevieve died on Oct. 3, 2005, in Phoenix. William worked in the shoe business for most of his career. While in Sioux City, he managed Barkers Shoes and opened his own shoe departments in Fishgall’s and Bostwick’s. While in Phoenix, he obtained his Realtor’s license and sold real estate for nearly 15 years. In 2010, he returned to Sioux City to live near his eldest son.
William loved to play golf and always enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, William Jr. and Jane of Jefferson, S.D., and Richard and Macy of Warrington, Pa.; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Elisa and Erika; three great-grandchildren, Athena, Lily and Evie; his brother, Harold of Long Island, N.Y.; and his sister, Betty Gegoux of Kent, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a grandson, Brian.
