William "Bill" Wankum, 89, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Bill was born April 14, 1935, in Marcus, Iowa. He was the oldest son of Paul and Anna Wankum. He graduated from Holy Name High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. Bill enjoyed a successful career, working as an Office Manager for Wheatbelt and an Estimator for both Midwest Paving and Brower Construction.
Bill married his beloved wife, Diane in 1961. He was a loving father to Judy (Dave) Dickinson, Julie (Brett) Clayton, Jamie (Chris) Wankum, and Jodie Hill. He cherished his role as grandfather to Megan Dickinson, Sarah (Sean) Richardson, Nick Wankum, Ben Wankum, Michael Wankum, and Becca Clayton. He was Theo’s “Grandpa Great” and his face lit up whenever they were together.
Bill was a man of many talents. He was a skilled gardener and found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren. Known for his ingenuity, Bill could fix almost anything brought his way.
In his later years, Bill resided in two care facilities where his kind and gentle personality endeared him to staff and fellow residents. He was known for his sweet nature, charming personality, and his ability to make others smile.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Anna Wankum; his sister, Mary Loucks; his wife, Diane; his brother, Ray Wankum; his brother-in-law, Ray Hanson, and his son-in-law, Russell Hill. He is survived by his brother, Don Wankum, his sister Margret Hanson, and sister-in-law Kathy Wankum and many nieces and nephews.
Bill will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers family would like memorials to be directed to the Warming Shelter and American Legion Post 307/VFW in South Sioux City, NE for their generosity to the Veterans at Regency Square Nursing Home.
