North Sioux City - Willis G. "Will" Strawn III, 41, of North Sioux City passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. The Rev. Craig Collison will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
He was born on May 25, 1972, in Ames, Iowa. Will was a 1990 graduate of Storm Lake (Iowa) High School. As a child and growing up, he gained a love for music and singing which led him to become a member of the Iowa Ambassadors of Music, traveling to Europe.
After graduation, Will attended the University of South Dakota. He began working at Gateway in 1992, where he served in many different capacities. His last of which took him into the IT department and the subsequent transfer to Lockheed Martin. While working for Gateway and Lockheed, Will began attending Western Iowa Tech Community College and obtained certifications in emergency services. In 1999, Will began working for Siouxland Paramedics dispatching 911 emergency calls and as an emergency responder. He returned to Gateway for a short time before realizing his true calling, to serve and help people in his community.
Will attended St Luke's School of Nursing, graduating in 2006. He began working at Mercy Medical Center in the ER at the same time continuing his education by obtaining his bachelor’s degree in nursing at Briar Cliff University in 2009. Will again moved careers, working at CNOS until 2013 when he obtained a position with the South Dakota Department of Corrections. Will was an active member of the North Sioux City Fire Department from 1997 to current, serving as a firefighter and EMT. During these years, he had served as past president of the NSC Fire Department. He was also the vice president of the Westside Little League. He was also a Mason and a Shriner.
Will is survived by his wife, Patty; children, Willis IV, Jackson, and Isabella, all of McCook Lake, S.D.; his parents, Willis and Karen Strawn of Jefferson, S.D.; a sister, Laura (Tod) Stokes and children, Nathan and Lillian of Sioux City; grandparents, Richard and Myra Peiffer of South English, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Jeanne Derby of Sioux City; brother-in-law, Cory (Bridgett Berger) Derby of Sioux City; sisters-in-law, Amie (Mike) Derby and Emma (Kelly) Rooney, both of McCook Lake, Iowa; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Security National Bank were a memorial fund has been set up for the Strawn family.
