JACKSON, Neb. -- Wilma J. Burns, 77, of Jackson passed away Feb. 8, 2011, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Creek, in Ponca, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Wilma was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Ponca, Neb., to William "Bill" and Ida (Marshall) Burns. She grew up in the Waterbury, Neb., area. She attended school and graduated from Waterbury High School. She later attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., and graduated with a teaching degree. She later returned to Wayne State College to obtain her master's in elementary education.
She moved to Minneapolis in 1963 and resided there until 1993, when she moved to Jackson. She was a lifelong first-grade educator.
Wilma was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Shirley Burns of Jackson; nieces and nephews, David and Mary Liz Burns of Lincoln, Neb., Mary and Dan McLaughlin of Kansas City, Mo., Bill and Desiree Burns of Blair, Neb., Bridget and Bruce Davis of South Sioux City, Rita and Steve Straub of Gardner, Kan., Dan Heeney of Beatrice, Neb., Pat and Debbie Heeney of Madison, S.D., Judy Heeney of Jackson, Marcie and Jeff Biggerstaff of Sioux City, Mark and Misty Barber of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mike Barber of Richmond, Texas, and David and Heather Barber of Sioux City; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Burns, and William A. Burns Jr.; and sisters, Elaine Heeney, Dorothy Barber and Lou Anne Burns.
